HENRIETTE RONNER-KNIP (1821-1909)

an elder cat watches

is a Dutch salon artist from the "Belle Epoque" who is famous for her commissioned cat portraits. In 1876 the Queen of Belgium commissioned her to paint two of her favorite lapdogs. The success of this work led to many other prestigious commissions from royal families. A year later, she was given the Cross of the Leopold Order, a rare achievement for a woman artist. In 1998, a major retrospective of her work was held at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam. In her paintings, Ronner-Knip concentrated on animal scenes in the lush Belle Epoch interiors popular at the time. The animals have individual personalities and almost human characteristics.
